Grid Protection

Superconducting Fault Current Limiters (SFCL)

Technical Overview

SFCL devices exploit the sharp superconductor-to-normal transition state, allowing them to self-trigger instantaneously when fault currents exceed critical levels (Ic).

Our resistive SFCL architectures use REBCO tapes maintained in a cryogenic vessel — shifting safely into high impedance in less than 2 milliseconds. Inductive (saturated core) SFCL setups utilize an advanced HTS DC bias coil to achieve the same unparalleled protection metrics.

Benefits & Applications

  • Asset Protection: Shields highly valuable transformers and vital switchgear systems worth $2M+.
  • Cost Efficiency: Eliminates the costly need for bulky and expensive traditional current limiting reactors.
  • Reliability Focused: Solid-state operations with absolutely no moving parts required, ensuring minimal maintenance.
  • Instantaneous Recovery: Self-triggers to limit damage and automatically resets without operational delays.
